“When have I ever denied the importance of love? I've only denied my need for it.”

Kyle is a Devil May Cry original character. He is a human and the only remaining descendant of the infamous Blueblood family. He used to be a vigilante hunter, but after meeting Dante and joining Devil May Cry, he officially became a Devil Hunter.

Appearance

Kyle’s overall structure is relatively feminine. He’s roughly 170cm tall. He has a slender frame, far less muscular than the other Devil Hunters, but he isn’t muscle-less thanks to his job. When he was a teenager, he was on the skinny side due to the lack of proper nutrition, but as he became an adult, he has acquired a healthier build thanks to Dante, who would make sure he was well-fed.

He has short, untidy black hair that comes to his neck with bangs that fall right above his eyes. When he was a child, his bangs were straight, but ever since Kyle entered adulthood, they’ve been swept to the right. As a child and teenager, his hair was more of a bob cut, completely covering his ears. In adulthood, he tucks his hair behind his ears, but a few strands poke out in front of them, sometimes called ‘antennas’. His hair is overall slightly shorter than his teenage years.

His skin is rather pale with a pink undertone, and he has dark circles under his eyes, along with a beauty mark beneath his right eye. His eyes are a light, pale pink color, usually described as dreamy pink.

His attire is quite simple. He usually wears a black turtle neck with a grey long coat on top, black jeans, and sneakers. But during the summer he wears a baggy checkered shirt. Preferring big clothing, he generally wears oversized garments at home. He has self-inflicted scars on his wrists, which is one of the reasons he often wears clothing that doesn’t reveal much of his skin.

Personality

Kyle is usually quiet and reserved, but his behavior heavily depends on the situation he’s in. Being an untrusting individual, he’s stoic, wary, and rather awkward around strangers, often treating them in a cold or neutral manner to keep his distance. However, he’s highly empathetic and will be kinder when he notices one’s inner scars. When provoked, he will be far more blunt and vulgar, expressing his hostility, though it takes a lot to get him to this point. Most of the time, he doesn’t give his trust easily, but he easily becomes vulnerable when he’s treated with kindness. When he’s relaxed or wants to get comfortable, he’ll act in a more casual manner.

His mannerisms around those he trusts are completely different. While he’s generally shy and cautious, he will not hesitate to show his care and affection when necessary. When it comes to people he’s attached to, he’ll even get clingy and sometimes playful. This side of him is especially prominent around his boyfriend, Dante.

He’s incredibly insecure and doubtful of himself, and he even carries severe abandonment issues, leading to occasional withdrawals or breakdowns. He feels immense guilt about any kind of misfortune that happens to his loved ones, especially because he dreads being useless and being replaced. He believes that the purpose of his existence is to make people happy, and when he thinks he fails to do so, he’ll feel strong hatred towards himself.

While he is careful and tries to be rational with others, he is reckless and impulsive when it comes to himself. He will not hesitate to try to go beyond his limits if he wants to, even though it could potentially kill him.

He is very loyal to those he trusts most, partially because he has a natural instinct to serve someone as his ancestors used to serve demons. Even when he developed a crush on Dante, Kyle saw him more as a master to serve rather than a partner. However, Dante told Kyle that he wasn't his master and that they were equals, stopping Kyle from seeing him as a master. Kyle's loyalty almost has no limits - even if the person hurts him, he will still remain loyal to them. However, he will eventually leave when he realizes that the person is being a negative influence to him.

Biography

Childhood

Kyle’s father was a part of the Blueblood bloodline, which is hunted by demons due to its history of betrayal. Because of this, Kyle’s parents were incredibly protective of him, rarely letting him go outside on his own or hang out with others. Unaware of the history of his bloodline nor the reason his parents were overprotective of him, Kyle believed that the outside world was simply a very dangerous place as a child. While he was obedient, he often envied other children who were allowed to go out freely. When Kyle was around ten years old, his house was attacked by a group of powerful demons which resulted in the death of his parents. Being a human child with no weapons nor any kind of strength, Kyle himself almost got killed as well when a demon stabbed him through the chest with a purple sword. But the spirit of the sword, Unha, noticed the potential and fierce will in Kyle’s soul, choosing him as his new master. With the power of the purified demonic sword, Kyle was healed and fought with Unha by his side, defeating the demons that ambushed him and his family. Kyle was eventually found and taken in by the Aalock family, which praises the Blueblood family almost religiously. He was raised to become a devil hunter, oblivious to how manipulative the Aalocks were until he entered his late teens. His adoptive family expected Kyle to get together with a woman and have children, which is one of the reasons they expressed immense disapproval when they later found out that Kyle was getting along with Dante, the infamous son of Sparda.

Adolescence

After being taken in by the Aalocks, Kyle spent most of his life in isolation. His adoptive family mostly cared about Kyle’s power and survival rather than his well-being, so Kyle couldn’t get any help from them when it came to problems aside from fighting and money. He was bullied in school due to his closed off personality, and sometimes he was avoided because students would spread false rumors about him. This made him more avoidant when it came to social contact. He only had one close friend, but they naturally grew apart as they attended different schools later on.

In his mid teens, he somehow got a boyfriend who was older than him. Kyle was incredibly attached to the man, unaware of the subtle power dynamic between them. He needed his boyfriend like he needed oxygen, but he slowly got detached as he learned that the relationship was destroying him. His boyfriend would often force him into sexual activities, not caring much about Kyle’s own pleasure. And he would also comment on Kyle’s looks and personality, making Kyle even more insecure than he already was. He eventually broke off the relationship with trauma and promised himself never to let himself get into a relationship again.

As the pressure and realization of manipulation got stronger, Kyle moved out and started living alone in the outskirts of Redgrave City. While the pressure of meeting expectations lessened, his situation didn’t get much better. Living alone gave him the freedom to harm himself, vape, and drink whenever he wanted to, and these became his coping methods.

Post-Devil May Cry 4

Kyle was practically suicidal ever since he moved out, and he’d recklessly hunt demons just for relief along with slight hope that he would die in the process. After the events of DMC4, Dante was sent on a mission to ‘eliminate a human-like demon in Redgrave City’. On his journey of looking for this ‘human-like demon’, Dante saw Kyle, who had just finished killing a group of demons. Feeling demonic aura from Kyle because of his sword, Dante was certain that this was the demon the client was referring to. However, he knew that Kyle himself was a human, so he had no intent to actually kill him. Intrigued, Dante approached the young man, seeing some kind of potential in him like Unha did. Kyle’s first reaction when he saw Dante was pure hostility. He threatened Dante despite his exhausted state and attacked him even while being aware that he had demon blood, but he didn’t stand a chance. The only impact he managed to have on Dante was using the Mongwundo’s powers to make him see illusions of his trauma, but this didn’t last long. As he recovered, Dante disarmed Kyle, and Kyle simply decided to give in to his fate, telling Dante to get his job(killing him) over with. Dante declined, saying that he never intended to kill Kyle, and eventually leaving Kyle behind, though he expected to see him again.

After their first encounter, Kyle continuously saw Dante despite them living in different cities(Dante lives in Capulet City). Dante continued to approach Kyle, offering him to join Devil May Cry. But the biggest reactions Kyle would give were short sentences like “Fuck off”, making it clear that he didn’t want to have anything to do with Dante. This went on for four months until Kyle gradually lowered his walls, a part of him realizing that Dante was being genuine with him. He joined the business and didn’t push Dante away as much as he used to, though he still made his boundaries clear. The two seemed to become closer, and Dante had grown rather protective of Kyle. However, after two more months, Kyle’s mental issues rapidly worsened, and he hid away as if he never existed in the first place. Dante tried to reach him but couldn’t, and after a few months, he gave up.

Kyle was hiding away for half a year, mostly staying in his apartment and occasionally going outside at night. His hair grew to his shoulders, he became pale as a corpse, and he also got incredibly skinny. One night, he sensed demonic presence nearby and went outside to see a massive demon. Taking this as a chance for one last fight before his death, he attacked the demon, knowing that it would be too strong for him to beat alone. He didn’t care about his injuries as he was expecting to die during the fight anyway. Eventually the demon threw the battered Kyle to a wall, making him fall unconscious. Witnessing this, Dante effortlessly defeated the demon with rare rage, determined to save Kyle one way or another. He brought Kyle to Devil May Cry and started to aid him despite his protests, making Kyle stay at his office until he was back in good shape. He didn’t trust Kyle to be able to take care of himself alone, knowing that Kyle would most likely attempt something reckless again if he didn’t have anyone watching over him.

At Dante’s continuous care, Kyle found himself trusting him, even though he didn’t want to admit it. He got comfortable enough to talk to Dante first, and his guarded attitude from before was mostly gone. After another half a year, Kyle was fully healed thanks to Dante’s help. During that time, he was finally able to trust Dante to the point that he could casually joke with him or tease him, and he started to care for him too. He’d check up on Dante and try to comfort him whenever he sensed that something was wrong. They found comfort in each other’s presence. They both developed feelings for each other by this time, but neither of them admitted it because love was off-limits for them, even though they were flirting all the time. Dante was afraid of Kyle dying if he let him get too close, and Kyle was afraid of being manipulated or discarded. He was also constantly anxious, thinking that Dante would eventually get together with someone else or stop caring about him, especially because of Dante’s flirtatious nature.

As time passed, Dante and Kyle grew more and more comfortable with each other, and at some point they allowed physical contact. They simply did everything but sex. They implicitly saw each other as their partner, but it was never declared that they were in a relationship.

Devil May Cry 5: Before the Nightmare

Dante and Kyle were still close, but Kyle’s anxiety grew more and more as he doubted his own worth. Being with Dante was like a blessing to him, but it also made him constantly compare himself with others and think that he wasn’t good enough. So one evening, Kyle asked Dante what they were. Dante responded that he wasn’t a fan of putting labels on things, but Kyle confessed his uncertainty - his desire and reluctance to be in an actual relationship with him. At that, Dante confirmed that he wanted Kyle, and that they were together from the very beginning in his book. They officially became a couple that day, making love for the first time.

Devil May Cry 5

Kyle didn’t take part in the events of DMC5. However, he was aware of the Qliphoth incident. Because he lived in the outskirts of Redgrave, his own neighborhood almost got destroyed, but thankfully the damage didn’t reach him. Before Dante left to fight Urizen, he informed Kyle that he would be on a mission and that he would return soon. Kyle wanted to join, but Dante strongly kept him from getting involved, being certain that Kyle wouldn’t last a second.

After Dante got defeated by Urizen, Nero told Kyle that he wasn’t sure what happened to Dante. Because of this, Kyle had another meltdown, withdrawing from the world until he was informed about Dante’s return. While Nero did tell Kyle that Dante was alive, Kyle wasn’t very happy about it as Dante had gone to the Underworld with Vergil, even though he did recover a little from his withdrawn state. When he was certain that he’d never see Dante again, Dante returned to the human world and reunited with Kyle.

Powers and Abilities

Mongwundo & Maeumdo

Kyle himself doesn’t have any special powers. His source of his abilities is his sword, Mongwundo. Mongwundo’s main feature is the ability to see through others’ minds and memories, but it is also powerful in combat. As the name, which translates to ‘sword of dream clouds’, indicates, it has a strong connection to dreams and clouds. With Mongwundo’s powers, Kyle can see one’s dreams(including nightmares), thoughts and emotions, and memories. He is able to create figures or illusions of these with pink clouds to distract or overwhelm his opponent. When he reads through someone, his eyes glow slightly to show that he is using his powers. In addition, he uses pink clouds as a means of transportation. He is able to summon a thin layer of clouds beneath him and let it carry him to his destination at the speed of a motorcycle or faster. In combat, Mongwundo’s abilities are similar to Yamato’s and Mirage Edge’s, but weaker and slower. One of Kyle’s special skills is launching a small beam of light from the tip of his blade and penetrating his opponent. Instead of physical harm, it creates illusions of his opponent’s worst nightmares and fears. Kyle’s skills related to reading others are not very effective on lesser demons as they do not have any fears, but they are helpful when it comes to fighting enemies with cognition.

When Kyle is emotionally overwhelmed in a negative way and his hatred reaches its peak, Mongwundo returns to its original form, Maeumdo. Kyle’s eyes turn purple and his voice sounds as if there are two people in one body. This is because Unha is practically using Kyle as a host in this form, and is taking full control of Kyle’s body. When Maeumdo is used, it creates purple smoke instead of pink clouds, and mainly targets one’s negative thoughts. Maeumdo is stronger and faster than Mongwundo, but it is more unstable as Kyle(Unha) is being driven by his own negative emotions. To end this, Kyle must be ‘woken up’ or heavily injured to the point that his body cannot keep up. (While Unha is in control, that does not change the fact that Kyle’s body is a human’s.)

Devil Trigger

Kyle’s Devil Trigger doesn’t change Kyle himself as he is a pure human. Instead, he summons Unha and fights with him like how Vergil summons his doppelganger in DMC5. The difference with Doppelganger is that Unha does not mimic Kyle’s movements and fights on his own, similar to V’s familiars when they fight automatically. There is no time limit - Kyle can unsummon Unha whenever he wants.

Sin Devil Trigger

Kyle’s SDT is called HDT(Hwa Devil Trigger). He fully becomes one with Unha, being able to have demonic speed, strength, and stamina. When HDT is activated, Kyle’s entire body glows, and he is able to float around like Unha. His voice also becomes a mix of his own voice and Unha’s voice, making it sound more ethereal as Unha’s voice echoes. Kyle can have this boost of power for a short time until he gets drained as his body reaches its limit from the outburst. He is unable to deactivate it with his own will - it only deactivates when he is forced to return to his normal form.

Equipment

Mongwundo

Mongwundo(몽운도/夢雲刀), which was once called the Maeumdo before Kyle became its master, is Kyle’s devil arm. It has a demonic spirit called Unha. Mongwundo is a hwando, and has a similar appearance to a katana. Its sheath is dark pink with clouds drawn on it, and a sageo with a darker shade of pink is attached to its side. The metal parts like the guard and blade collar are a rose gold color. The blade is long, almost identical to one of a katana but shorter. It has a faint tint of light pink. Whenever Kyle uses his abilities with Mongwundo, a pink trace follows the blade and dissipates like smoke. When Mongwundo changes into Maeumdo, the pink colors are replaced with dark purple.

As the name, ‘sword of dream clouds’ suggests, it is related to one’s memories and thoughts. It has the ability to make ‘dreams come true’, at least for a little while. The Mongwundo is able to create anything its master wishes with pink clouds, whether it be a weapon or a person. However, these clouds disappear if Kyle is too far away from them or if too much time passes.
